Goal
💡 Aletiq offers two complementary mechanisms for your objects — parts, products, documents, product definitions and manufacturing processes: the ID, assigned when the object is created, and the revision number, assigned to each new revision. Both are configured in the Numbering tab of Administration, each in its own section.

Define Classes for your Objects
To benefit from the Automatic Numbering feature, Objects must have a value in the "Class" property.
To define these values, follow the steps below:
Access the Properties page, in the Administration tab,
Select your Object and press Class
Add the values of your choice.

Create a new Numbering rule
All values defined above are subject to a Numbering rule. To create one, follow these steps:
Access the Numbering page, in the Administration tab,
Select your Object and press New Rule
Follow the steps to define your Rule:
Give it a name
Select the class(es) concerned
Create a custom ID structure with your selection of text, separator and counter

💡 Good to know!
The counter is incremented automatically and uses the first available number in the database.
The identifiers of objects already published on Aletiq remain unchanged after a rule has been modified.
If several rules apply to the same object, the identifier will be generated according to the first rule in the list.
Upon creation, the identifier preview is generic: the final number is displayed once creation has been confirmed.
The ‘Class’ property only appears in the creation form if a numbering rule exists (unless you have added it to the view).
Where is the identifier generated?
As long as a rule exists for the selected class, the identifier is automatically assigned when the object is created, regardless of where you create it:
In the Aletiq application;
From the CAD plug-in (e.g. SolidWorks), when creating or duplicating a part;
From the Office plug-in, when creating a document.
👉 The identifier is therefore assigned directly from your usual software, without having to return to Aletiq.

Revision numbering
You can also enforce a format on your objects' revision number, in addition to the ID. This feature applies to documents, parts (CAD tab), product definitions and manufacturing processes.
💡 The Product does not have its own revision rule: its revision follows that of its product definition.
The available revision schemes
A revision rule applies one of three schemes:
Numeric: a sequence of digits (e.g.
01,02…), with a configurable number of digits and starting value.Letter: a sequence of letters (e.g.
A,B…), with the option to skip letters that can be mistaken for digits when displayed (such as I and O).Major/Minor: a major revision followed by a minor revision (e.g.
A01), to distinguish a significant change from a minor correction.
💡 The exact format (number of digits, starting value, skipped letters) is specific to each rule and each Aletiq instance. Never treat a revision example as universal: check the rule that applies to your object in your Administration.
Create a revision rule
To create a revision numbering rule, follow these steps:
Access the Numbering page, in the Administration tab
Select the Object revision tab
Choose the relevant object type: Document, CAD, Product definition or Manufacturing process
Press New Rule
Under Which documents?, select the class(es) concerned (or check All documents)
Under Revision generation model, choose the Revision format, the Number of digits and the starting value (Starts at); a preview of the first revision values is displayed

Where and when does the revision apply?
As soon as a revision rule exists for the selected class, the revision field is automatically filled in and cannot be edited, whether:
In the Aletiq application;
From the CAD plug-in (panel and save windows);
From the Office plug-in.
The rule applies both to creating and renaming a revision, and to publishing a definition or a part to a product.
🔒 With a Major/Minor scheme, you need to indicate at each update whether the change is major or minor: this choice determines which part of the revision number is incremented.
🎯 In short, revision numbering lets you:
Enforce a consistent format on your objects' revision numbers,
Ensure consistency between the application, the CAD plug-in and the Office plug-in,
Meet the requirements of your ERP systems or quality standards (strict incrementation, mandatory format, etc.)
